Professor
Jefferson Health
James S Harrop MD, MSHQS is a Professor of neurological and orthopedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University.
He graduated from Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in 1995 and continued with his internship and neurosurgical residency here. He then completed a combined Neurosurgical and Orthopedic spine fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He began his practice at Jefferson and developed a strong infrastructure by establishing the Division of Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery in our department. He was able to recruit and grow the Division from one to nine neurosurgical faculty. He started and obtained CAST certification, a spine fellowship recognized as one of the tops in the country. He collaborates closely with the Department of Orthopedics. Today, the Division performs over 2000 operations per year and has some of the lowest length of stay data compared to peer groups around the country, and excels in a number of additional quality metrics.
Furthermore, as mentioned, Dr. Harrop is a consummate academician, and his CV speaks towards that, but I will highlight some points which need emphasis. He has over 600 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 100 book chapters. He has presented nationally and internationally. He has one of the highest H-indices (81) in the University, including full-time scientists. This significant H-factor truly reflects the impact of his publications in spinal trauma, spinal cord injury research, degenerative disease management, and deformity spinal disorders. Academically, the Division he leads is also exceptional. Every year, they are the highest enrollers in every spinal cord injury trial.
