Nadia N. Laack, M.D., is a Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Laack is an endowed professor and is honored with the distinction of the Hitachi Professorship in Radiation Oncology Research. She is also the Enterprise Co-Deputy Director for Cancer Practice, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, leading the integration of the research, education and training, and practice missions in Radiation Oncology throughout Mayo Clinic’s 3 sites in Rochester/Midwest, Arizona and Florida. As a radiation oncologist, Dr. Laack specializes in pediatric cancers and brain tumors. She is using new imaging techniques and artificial intelligence/deep learning-informed radiomics to guide precision radiation treatments for children and adults with brain tumors. Dr. Laack is an accomplished researcher and her findings have been published in over 150 scientific articles in prominent peer-reviewed journals and she has authored over a dozen book chapters. She has led multiple national clinical trials using advanced radiation techniques such as intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) to improve outcomes and reduce toxicity of radiation treatment. Her work has been supported by the National Cancer Institute, Brains Together for a Cure, and National Childhood Cancer Foundation and she is currently the lead investigator of a national clinical trial run through the Children's Oncology Group to reduce cognitive effects of radiation for pediatric brain tumor patients. Throughout her training and career, Dr. Laack has received many honors and awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine; the Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award from the Radiological Society of North America; the Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship Award for Outstanding Clinical Performance, Humanitarianism and Scholarly Activity; and Teacher of the Year – Radiation Oncology, conferred by Mayo Fellows Association. She co-founded and served as the co-director of the Mayo Clinic Radiation Oncology CME course where she continues to serve as an invited speaker. In her free time she enjoys cheering loudly and inappropriately at her three sons soccer games and traveling with her family to learn from the many cultures as well as experience the beauty and wonders of our precious planet.
