Vera Ong is a third year medical student at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii and is a recipient of the Hiromu Matsumoto Scholarship. She is applying into neurosurgery within this upcoming residency application cycle.
She graduated with a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA and has been involved in Dr. Isaac Yang’s neurosurgical research lab for 7 years, starting from the fall quarter of her first undergraduate year. She has 30 peer-reviewed publications, is a Carolyn Kuckein AΩA Research Fellowship recipient, obtained 5 other research-related awards, and has garnered 4 conference speaker presentations. She has conducted projects ranging from tumor to spine to vascular and continually finds ways to diversify her knowledge base and refine her research skills.
