Michael M. McDowell, MD is an Assistant Professor at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. In addition to a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship, Dr. McDowell completed a two-year fellowship focused on open and endoscopic skull base surgery under Dr. Paul Gardner and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Neurosurgery Residency Program. His academic interests include pediatric skull base neurosurgery, non-invasive diagnostic testing, and medical education. He is the founder and course director of the second year medical school course "Brain and Blade", which for the past six years has attempted to provide a comprehensive overview of neurological surgery through a series of lectures and cadaveric dissections. He was named Faculty of the Year for Best Pre-Clinical Elective course last year. Dr. McDowell's studied contemporary ballet at Arizona State University and competed in Latin Dance during his time there. He resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Dr. Samantha McDowell. He and his wife, Samantha McDowel, DDS, are avid lovers of Chinese Shar Pei and is currently raising and training Blackwitch Farms' "Sushi Roll" for competition in AKC dog shows in the near future.
