Medical Student
Perelman School of Medicine
My name is Dominic Romeo and I am a second-year medical student at the University of Pennsylania's Perelman School of Medicine interested in a career in neurosurgery. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, I moved to Beijing, China to learn about health equity while working at the World Health Organization (WHO). While at the WHO, I was a television personality for four years on “Informal Talks”, a Mandarin-language show watched by more than 700 million, where I mediated discussions on topics including mental health. Simultaneously, I started shadowing healthcare providers in Beijing’s urban, understaffed hospitals and my focus shifted towards my own desire to one day provide care as a physician.
Pursuing this desire brought me to the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, where I am currently a second-year medical student. Here, I helped lead the Medical Mandarin course, run various marathons-including the Boston Marathon this upcoming April-and have delved into academic research. I currently have two academic publications in peer-reviewed journals, two other manuscripts submitted for publication, and three poster presentations accepted to conferences, including my abstract that was recently accepted to the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting. Currently, my research interests include neuroendovascular surgery, which I see as an innovative surgical aproach for complex brain and spinal cord vascular diseases. My past experience guides me as I seek to add my voice to the neurosurgical literature and broader community.
