Dr Bederson is the Leonard I. Malis, MD / Corinne and Joseph Graber Professor and System Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Health System. Prior to 2008, he served as Director of the Cerebrovascular Surgery Program, Co-Director of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, and Director of the Neurosurgery Residency Program. In 2012 he launched the Brain Surgery Simulation Program , the Neurosurgery Simulation Core in 2015, and Mount Sinai BioDesign and AISINAI in 2018. Dr Bederson currently oversees all clinical, educational and research programs in the Department, which provides neurosurgery services at 8 hospitals across New York City, Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island. The department has more than 49 full-time neurosurgery faculty and they perform more than 3,350 neurosurgery, 2,250 neuroendovascular procedures, and 230 stroke cases annually. Dr Bederson's areas of clinical expertise include skull base and cerebrovascular surgery such as benign and malignant intracranial tumors and cerebrovascular conditions. Previously he was Mount Sinai’s first neurosurgeon to be PI on NIH-funded research, which involved animal models of stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage for developing novel pharmacological therapeutic strategies. His clinical research focus on developing intra-operative applications of advanced digital visualization technologies including microscope integration of augmented reality and virtual reality, and 3D printing patient-specific anatomy. Dr Bederson Co-founded Sinai BioDesign, a Mount Sinai's center for Medical technology innovation and rapid prototyping. The center was founded with a $2.5-million grant from the NYC EDC in 2013. and was recently awarded a seond $11.6M grant for Life Sciences Infrastructure. Since then, we have engaged 75+ faculty, filed 18 patents, and launched four start-up companies that have collectively secured $55 million in venture capitial funding. Through this program and associated events, over 100 students have trained with BioDesign including Masters of Engenering, PhD, and MD/PhD students.
