Mr. James Withers, OMS-II, is a second-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to starting medical school at the University of New England in 2021, James earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Biology at Utah State University (USU). James competed as a division I athlete at USU as a distance runner on the cross country and track teams, specializing in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. He represented USU at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2017 and 2019. James Spent three years in an insect ecology lab where he worked under Dr. Alston investigating invasive species.
James works in a neuro-immunology lab with Dr. Cao, MD, Ph.D. at the University of New England, investigating inflammatory pathways in HIV sensory neuropathy. He worked with Dr. Regenhardt, MD, Ph.D., affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital, on two case reports on endovascular neurosurgery in 2022. Finally, under the guidance of Dr. Florman, MD, James is investigating the outcome of non-union fibrous odontoid fractures at the population level. He will present this study's results at the 2023 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting.
His current research interests include vascular neurosurgery intervention and management, spinal fracture management, and pain management. He is currently involved in a local running club and enjoys racing on a regular basis.
