Adam N. Mamelak, MD, FAANS is Professor of Neurosurgery, Surgical Director of the Pituitary Center and Director of Epilepsy and Functional Neurosurgery and at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Mamelak earned a BS degree at Tufts University and a MD at Harvard Medical School. He completed residency in neurosurgery at University of California at San Francisco and a research fellowship at California Institute of Technology, where he continues to hold an appointment as Visiting Associate in Biology. He was section head of Neurological Surgery at City of Hope Cancer Center before joining Cedars-Sinai in 2005. Dr Mamelak is an internationally recognized leader in pituitary surgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, and functional neurosurgery. His principal area of investigations involves developing tumor-specific fluorescence agents for surgical guidance, and correlating behavior with single unit neuronal activity in epilepsy patients undergoing depth electrode monitoring with the goal of better understating the mechanisms of learning and memory. In 1999, Dr. Mamelak received the National Brain Tumor Foundation AANS/CNS Award for Best Translational Research by a Practicing Neurosurgeon. He is also the winner of the Young Investigator Award from the Research Foundation of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Junior Investigator Award from the American Epilepsy Society, and a McKnight Foundation grant in Cognitive Neuroscience. He holds two US patents. Dr. Mamelak has published over 150 original reports in prestigious journals including Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron and Brain. He is a member of the editorial boards Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology. He has significant grant support for his research from NIH and other funding agencies. Beyond his busy clinical and research practices, he is married and a proud father to 6 children and 6 grandchildren.
