Bio Sketch – Marion L. Walker, MD
I completed my neurosurgical residency at the Barrow Neurological Institute and a pediatric neurosurgical fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children. I joined the faculty at the Primary Children’s Hospital and the University of Utah following the completion of my training in 1976. I remained in an academic practice until retirement in 2016. I now serve as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University of Utah.
I was active in the early movement to achieve recognition and certification for pediatric neurosurgeons in North America. I had the privilege of serving as President of the American Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery, Chairman of the Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurosurgeons, and President of the International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery. I played a role in the development of pediatric neurosurgery as a subspecialty and was part of the group that started the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery, which serves as our certifying body. I had the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. I also served as Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery Pediatrics, and Chairman of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
I have had the privilege to contribute to our knowledge and care of craniopagus twins and to the treatment of spasticity. I was the first neurosurgeon in North America to do selective dorsal rhizotomy, bringing that procedure back from Warrick Peacock in South Africa.
