Born and reared in DeSoto, Missouri, a railroad town south of St. Louis. Undergraduate education at the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in chemistry. Medical school, neurosurgical residency and faculty appointment at Duke. Time away during residency to Toronto for neurology and pediatric neurosurgery at Sick Kids. Following completion of residency spent ten months in europe, first six months in London at Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children and four months in Zurich with Professor Yasergil. Returned to Duke and tasked with the development of a pediatric neurosurgical service for the next fourteen years. Left as Associate Professor with tenure of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics. In 1992 moved to UAB as Professor and Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children's of Alabama. Appointed Hendley Chair of Pediatric Neurosurgery in 2002. Retired from clinical practice in 2016. Maintained an appointment in the department of neurosurgery as the Quality and Safety Officer. In 2020 was honored as Distinguished Professor by UAB. Along the way, published more than 500 peer reviewed articles and two text books, trained 28 residents and/or fellows as pediatric neurosurgeons and maintained an active clinical practice until my retirement. Was honored by the residents with the creation of annual teaching award named in my honor.
