Neurosurgeon devoted to clinical practice and research in trauma, emergency care, neurotrauma, and critical care. Dr. Rubiano earned his medical degree from the University of Valle in Colombia in 1998 and completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of El Bosque in Bogota, Colombia in 2005. In 2006, I was selected for a Neurotrauma and Critical Care Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University, sponsored by the J. Douglas Miller International Fellowship Award from The Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Upon completion, I received a postdoctoral position sponsored by the NIH Fogarty International Center at the University of Pittsburgh to pursue trauma research training between 2007 and 2009.
Shortly after I joined Neiva University in 2009, and assumed duties as the chief of the emergency and trauma department. In this role, I provided care for trauma cases coming from military operational areas of the Amazonian region of Colombia. In 2012, I was awarded a national grant for the development of the Colombian National Guidelines for Trauma Brain Injury and the ASHOKA International Social Entrepreneurship Award for my extensive work on healthcare education in austere environments. I later continued with a Ph.D. training in education sciences at the University of Tolima in Colombia. In
2016, I received an Honoris Causa degree in prehospital care technology for emergency and disasters from Universidad Adventista in Medellín (Colombia).
Actually, I hold a Ph.D. candidate position in Global Health, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Medicine from Università del Piemonte Orientale in Novara (Italy), through the Research Center in Emergency and Disaster Medicine (CRIMEDIM) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), through the
Research Group on Emergency and Disaster Medicine (ReGEDiM). As a member of the Trauma and Emergency Care Committee of the World Health Organization, I have worked with colleagues of international medical societies in trauma care research, training, and advocacy. I have participated in several research projects with the aim of developing the capacity building for trauma care in low and middle-income settings.
I´m the founder and medical director of MEDITECH Foundation, a research and training center in Colombia dedicated to improving medical skills for prehospital providers and emergency medicine physicians in advanced trauma care. I also act as vice president of the Global Neuro Foundation in Davos, Switzerland, actual President-of the Colombian Association of Neurosurgery, chair of the Colombian Chapter of the ACS Committee on Trauma, president of the Neurotrauma and Intensive Care Chapter of the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and chair of the International Committee of the Neurotrauma and Critical Care Section of the AANS. I´m a co-investigator in several NIH and NIHR grants related to research in traumatic brain injury and recently have been appointed as co-Chair of the Neurotraumatology Committee of the WFNS.
