Daniel B. Michael , MD, PhD is currently an Emeritus Director of the Michigan Head and Spine Institute. He is former Professor and Founding Residency Director, Department of Neurosurgery, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Beaumont Health. He is Past Chairman of the AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care for 2016-2018. Dr. Michael received his MD from Wayne State university School of Medicine where he also earned a PhD in anatomy and cell biology. He did his residency in Neurosurgery at Wayne State University-Detroit Medical Center in Detroit. After three years in private practice, he became Chief of Neurosurgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital, one of the nation’s “Legacy” city general and trauma hospitals. He served in the US Army reserves 1999-2009 and was mobilized to active duty in 2007. He was the first neurosurgeon to serve as President of the Michigan State Medical Society 2010-2011. Dr. Michael is a board member and past Chair of ThinkFirst Injury Prevention Foundation. He currently serves on the Archdiocese of Detroit Healthcare Advisory Committee. Dr. Michael has published clinical and basic science research in neurotrauma and co-authored some of the earliest work demonstrating altered gene expression in human brain following traumatic brain injury. He co-authored an ethics paper published in Science which highlighted ethical challenges in designing neuroimaging clinical trials. His current research focuses on a novel use of external radiation for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. He is frequently invited to speak or moderate sessions at the AANS and CNS annual meetings. He was honored to deliver the Anthony Marmarou, PhD Memorial Lecture at the 2017 Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting, Boston, MA.
