Dr. Matheus earned his medical degree from the J.M. Vargas School of Medicine, Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. He completed a neurological surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was named “Resident of the Year.�? In addition, he received the Synthes Award from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons for resident research on spinal cord and spinal column injuries. Dr. Matheus also completed a complex spine surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His general surgery internship was performed at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
Dr. Matheus’ clinical interests include treatment of spinal diseases through either an open or minimally-invasive approach, spinal deformity correction surgery, robotic assisted spine surgery and motion preservation procedures.
Prior to joining Orlando Health, Dr. Matheus was faculty for the University of Florida. Prior to this he was the medical director of neurosurgery at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, North Carolina where he was awarded the physician spotlight award for excellence of care. He also served as an assistant professor at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lillington, North Carolina. In addition, Dr. Matheus has completed a number of research studies, published in peer-reviewed journals and authored chapters on several books related to spine surgery.
